Home is where the heart is…. question is “wheres my heart?”

Lately I think about home 24/7. Today I was laying in my bed staring at the wall and thinking about everything that means home for me. My family, friends, church, food, and my animals. For a moment I forgot where I was but then my door swung open and one of my teammates walked in. Snapped back to reality, where I live with nine other people and am almost never alone. In reality I am surrounded by poverty and pain that I can't even begin to understand. Every day when I walk out of the gate there are children calling my name and jumping on me. I walk down the street and I see naked...

Home

               Lately I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about home. How excited I am to see my Mom and Dad, because after playing with orphans all day I have a new appreciation for them. I’ve been thinking about how nice it will be to just be able to drive somewhere by myself, and rock out to country music by myself, and get Starbucks, BY MYSELF.  I’ve been thinking about how stoked I am to go to college and start learning again, so I can remember how to do basic math.  ...

Turning the other way

This week 23 new kids, all of whom will now be going to college next term, started working downtown with the program I have talked about in previous blogs.  A group of us was excited about the prospect of getting to know these teenagers and helping them get up to speed with their new job and the associated responsibilities.  Unsurprisingly, all of them are quite friendly, have some interesting personalities and are fun to work with.  Once again, I think my evenings will become the part of my day I most...
